A hospital in northern Ontario needed to fill its Vice President, Corporate Services and Chief Financial Officer role. The organization had tried to fill the role on its own and was unsuccessful.
Market factors made it difficult. The market for qualified high caliber hospital VP Corporate Services and CFO talent in Canada is small and there were six other hospitals in Ontario simultaneously recruiting for the same role.
The location also offered its own challenge.
Working in partnership with our client, we took the time up front to thoroughly understand our client’s needs and wants, the organization's culture and challenges and the opportunities for the new executive.
Through our industry knowledge, contacts and own expertise we were able to present a number of strong candidates that not only met the traditional requirements for this role but also candidates outside the traditional mold who had the skills and experience to take on this role, meet the challenges the organization was facing and fit in with the organization's values and team.
Our client felt they had two strong candidates that could not only do the job but also contribute to the organization's success and fit with the culture. One candidate possessed the traditional VP Corporate Services/CFO background, the other, while a financial professional from the healthcare environment, had quite a different background but the necessary leadership and technical skills to discharge the role.
The client made an offer to the first candidate that was initially accepted but then turned down when the candidate received another offer that wouldn't require relocation.
The client felt comfortable making an offer to the second candidate. This required reengaging the candidate, which we were able to do as we had established a positive relationship based on trust, transparency and respect.
This offer was also turned down due to the candidate's personal circumstances. However, we knew the personal circumstances were possibly short term so we continued to work with both our client and the candidate and, after an interval of time, were ultimately able to place this person in the VP Corporate Services and CFO role.
